How are nutrition visits conducted?

Nutrition visits are conducted via our HIPAA-compliant video telehealth platform, Healthie.  In-person visits will be made available in the near future. 

Lisa is currently licensed in the states of Alabama, Florida, Massachussetts, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.  She is also able to practice telehealth in the states and jurisdictions that do not require licensure. 

Lisa is currently an insurance provider with Medicare Part B, Aetna Medicare Advantage and Aetna commercial insurance plans. 

Medicare Part B currently covers 3 hrs of Medical Nutrition Therapy for Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease Pre-dialysis during an initial year of diagnosis and 2 years for a subsequent year.  Additional hours can be requested from your physician upon request. Medicare Part B also covers 10 hours of DSMT training in the initial year and 2 hours for subsequent years. 

Lisa is continually working to become a provider with additional insurers.  It is recommended that each client do their diligence in reaching out to their insurance provider prior to the nutrition appointment to see if Medical Nutrition Therapy and Diabetes Self-Management services will be covered.  Some questions you can ask include: 

  • Does my plan cover Medical Nutrition Therapy and Diabetes Self-Management Training? 
    • When speaking with your insurance provider, provide them with the CPT codes associated with the type of service you are seeking to determine coverage. The CPT codes for our services are listed below: 
      • 97802: Medical Nutrition Therapy – Initial Assessment
      • 97803: Medical Nutrition Therapy – Reassessment
      • G0108: DSMT Individual session
      • G0109: DSMT group session
  • Do I need to meet my deductible before nutrition services are covered? 
  • Are there certain diagnoses that my plan covers or is Medical Nutrition Therapy covered for all diagnoses? 
  • Is a prior authorization required prior to the nutrition visit? 
  • Is there a total number of visits or hours that I am allotted for the year? 
  • The practitioner I am seeing is not a participating provider with my healthcare plan.  Will nutrition services or Diabetes Self-Management training be covered if a superbill is provided? 

English is the primary language for nutrition consults and Diabetes Self-Management Training. However, interpretation services, including ASL, can be available upon request.

Diabetes Self-Management Training: $800 or broken up by each session $80. 

Diabetes Medical Nutrition Therapy and Comprehensive Integrative Medical Nutrition Therapy consult: 

  • Initial: $179
