Lisa A. Mejia
Lisa A. Mejia is a Registered & Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. Her journey into dietetics and nutrition began on a quest to learn how to improve her own disordered eating for disease prevention, in addition to supporting others on their journey to optimal health and well-being. Lisa’s career in dietetics began in 2006, working as a diet clerk in a variety of skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers in New Jersey while studying to become a Registered Dietetic Technician (DTR). As a DTR, she continued to work in a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in Delray Beach, Florida while studying to become a Registered Dietitian. In December of 2011, Lisa earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics/Nutrition from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. In 2012, she relocated to Spring Hill, Florida where she began her career at Spring Hill Regional Hospital (now Tampa General Hospital Spring Hill) as a Registered Dietitian. Early in her career, Lisa observed that many people were being readmitted to the hospital due to acute complications of Inflammatory Bowel Disease despite following Medical Nutrition Therapy guidelines. Her curiosity and desire to find solutions to these nutritional challenges led her to the Academy of Integrative and Functional Nutrition where she became an Integrative and Functional Nutrition Certified Practitioner (IFNCP) in April of 2018. In November of 2018, Lisa relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. While there, she received the opportunity to work within St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center’s George Tully III Diabetes and Nutrition Center where she was able to learn from an extraordinary team of endocrinologists, dietitians and nurse diabetes educators. In December of 2019, she became a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist through the Certification Board of Diabetes Care and Education. In January of 2021, Lisa began working remotely with the Integrative Medicine and Health Department at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. During her time at the Mayo Clinic, Lisa was able to collaborate and learn from the highly skilled integrative medicine team and medical community at large for applicable integration of traditional medical nutrition therapy with complementary and alternative therapies for a whole-body systems approach to healing.
Individuals living with a variety of conditions often have complex nutritional challenges. Conditions where Lisa has been able to successfully navigate complex nutritional challenges include allergies, autoimmune conditions, central sensitization, dysautonomia, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), food intolerance/sensitivities, functional & surgical gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, mast cell disorders, oncology, and women’s health. Lisa developed the nutrition program for the EDS Living Program within the EDS clinic at the Mayo Clinic that received recognition as a Center of Excellence with the EDS Society in 2023. While navigating the nutritional challenges associated with EDS and its co-conditions, Lisa still felt there was a missing link on the behavioral manifestations to nutrition management. In May of 2024, Lisa ended her time at the Mayo Clinic to attend to the needs of her family, but her desire to continue to find solutions to the nutritional challenges experienced amongst individuals living with EDS continued. Therefore, Lisa has embarked on a journey to become competent in eating disorder therapy becoming familiar with a variety of counseling theories that can be utilized in nutrition practice. This includes understanding the complexities around neurodivergence, as well as, providing trauma informed care with additional insight into the autonomic nervous system's impact on health and how that can integrate into a variety of conditions, including disorders of the GI system. Lisa has a passion for learning and a drive to help individuals find peace with food and their bodies. Whether that be navigating the various messaging received in regards to diet and body size or diet and the complexities of living with a chronic condition. Lisa seeks to understand your unique journey and collaborate with you on finding lasting solutions that are unique and specific to your individual needs.
